Our bodies have so many parts, and they are all essential. But which one of them keeps us alive? When asked, most people say it’s the heart, brain, or both. Hardly will you hear anyone mention the lungs.
The lung is the part that allows you to breathe. It supplies oxygen to the blood in the heart, which pumps it out to the brain and all the other parts of the body. The heart and brain need oxygen to function well and keep you alive. That is impossible without the lungs.
Lungs must be in good health to perform their function well. Luckily, your body has a defence mechanism of its own to protect your lungs and keep dirt and germs away. But some things might overpower your system, putting you at risk of getting lung disease, such as
- Lung cancer
- Pneumonia
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Emphysema
- Influenza
Some of these conditions can cause severe damage to the lungs, which may or may not be reversible. Either way, there is nothing good that will come from it.
But you can always prevent such things by keeping your lungs healthy. There are several ways you can achieve that. These are:
- Quit smoking if you are a smoker. Also, avoid secondhand smoke.
- Avoid exposing yourself to indoor pollutants.
- Try to avoid outdoor air pollutants.

- Drink enough water.
